FAQ

What commitment is expected?

We ask that you volunteer for the minimum of a year.

What qualifications are required?

None.  We require someone who is working, going to school or retired.  Having a stable routine is seen as a positive as it demonstrates you are able to keep a regular commitment.

Will I be assigned a young person that lives in my community?

Yes. We do our best to accommodate a short travel distance.

Do I need access to a car?

No, we understand that not everyone has a vehicle, in which case, we’ll try to pair you with a young person on an accessible transit route.

How old are KidStart participants?

They are between the ages of six and eighteen. However, we continue to support mentors and participants when they are over eighteen as well.

Is there a cost involved?

Mentors receive a $30 monthly allowance to support the low cost activities they engage in with their mentees and, when possible, are provided with free tickets to special events. We are also happy to provide you with some activity ideas.

Do I receive any support or training from KidStart?

Absolutely!  You will be assigned a Coordinator of Volunteers who provides ongoing support and supervision. Volunteers will participate in monthly learning sessions and support meetings .

What volunteer opportunities are there with KidStart?

We have two programs:

KidStart age (6-12)

KidStart teens (13+)

Once you complete and submit the application, we will call you to schedule an interview. However, if you have any questions about volunteering with KidStart, please feel free to call us at 604.375.KIDS (5437).
