Vancouver, BC
A new program to help Victoria??s vulnerable children will officially launch with requests for volunteers and referrals on September 30th 2006.
KidStart, a mentoring program that provides positive adult volunteer mentors to troubled children, has a twenty year track record of success in the BC Lower Mainland.
In November 2005, PLEA Community Services won the $1million Vancity Award for KidStart with a proposal that included expanding the program to Vancouver Island communities in Victoria and Campbell River. David Duncan, board chair of PLEA, said, "We're thrilled to extend KidStart to Vancouver Island through partnerships with the John Howard Societies of Victoria and North Island."
KidStart is a free program for children age 6+ who are vulnerable to crime, addiction, abuse and family crisis. KidStart relies on funding from donations, grants and gaming revenue to provide and support a growing group of 180 committed volunteer mentors.
This year, KidStart volunteers throughout the BC Lower Mainland are dedicating more than 50,000 hours and through time and friendship, mentoring 300 children and youth providing them with successful experiences and wonderful memories.
