Maybe it can't buy you love, but a million dollars can help pay for a heck of a lot of mentoring.
PLEA Community Services Society of BC has been awarded a $1-million grant from Vancity to expand its KidStart Mentoring Program.
The program matches at-risk kids, age six and up, with adult volunteers who act as positive role models helping their charges build self-esteem and get back on the road to success.
The recent windfall will allow KidStart to house all of its services under one roof and hire additional staff to train volunteers.
"PLEA's KidStart Mentoring Centre will help its valued volunteers get the tools, training and peer support they need to continue to do work that has such a huge impact on troubled children in this region," said Elain Duvall, chair of Vancity's board of directors.
This is the fifth year Vancity has awarded $1 million, the largest corporate gift of its kind in Canada, to a deserving project.
